My Chef's Addiction

My chef is quite particular about certain things, especially those regarding food and the kitchen. Yes, he's loves new shoes, leather jackets, video games, and electronics. But as far as his domain goes he is a sucker for:


We went to Sam's Club a couple months ago and I thought he was going to wet himself when he saw the industrial size box of 3000 square feet of plastic wrap. 3000 square feet: that like 35x the size of our apartment! This thing weighs about 12 pounds and cost over $10. Which is fine by me because it will last forever; I plan on passing it on to my first born chef. It was an investment.

He loves these types of things. And I've come to the realization that I cannot change that; I accept his obsessions. Some of his other "cannot survive without them" items include:

-drinks. We always have at least 5 different kinds of drinks (non alcoholic) and we go through them like they're holy water. (Come on over! We've got Turkey Hill green tea, milk, water, soda, Gatorade, and lemonade.

-Chinese food. If it were up to him we would have a standing order for fried dumplings, general Tso's chicken and shrimp lo mein. {{{But I don't like standing orders. I like calling in the order; it shows respect for the chef.}}}

-DVR. If that man couldn't tape all the chef shows and survivorman shows and south park shows on TV then he would implode from work-stress.

He will only use Wustoff knives. He keeps his own set at work, at home, and an extra case with extra knives in a breifcase in his car.

He only likes using fresh herbs none of that dried herbs.

He has like twenty chef coats in his closet.

I don't feel so bad that we also have a HUGE storage container of OLD, STAINED chef coats. Because you never know when they might come in handy.

-knives in the car...thats incredible. Do you watch the office? Last week's episode involved "various weaponry hidden around the office".

My chef loves having his shows recorded too! The first thing he does after work is watch them. He is also an absolute neat freak... out of the kitchen included (i.e. his one joy in life = having the area behind the fridge cleaned... every day).

Do you find that, perhaps because they are used to the rush at work, that they do everything at warp speed? Even when they don't have to rush? My chef does. When it comes to making his bed (something he has to do every morning without fail, probably has to do with his neat freakiness - and I am talking hospital corners), doing the dishes, folding clothes -- basically non-cooking related activities -- it's like watching someone on fast-forward.

Wow, sounds like you've got a super chef husband on your hands! I can't exactly get my husband to clean as much as you do. He's a neat freak at work, but when he cooks at home I end up cleaning fingerprint marks off the cupboard handles.

Regarding his speed, my chef RUNS to and from the kitchen when he's home. Its hysterical watching him run in our tiny 850 sq. foot apartment.

My chef Hates tongs! He calls people who use tongs "tong jockeys". He himself uses big oversized spoons for everything. We have a drawer full of spoons; you would think that there is not a wide variety of spoons but, like a little black dress, there are many different sizes and shapes of spoons for every occasion. My chef can never have enough spoons..

My chef requires at least 6 double espressos per day, is obsessed with not letting any cabs cut him off while driving and uses an unusual amount of Q-Tips on a daily basis.

Yeah, LARN my chef has got the large spoons too. I think they teach that in culinary school. Its odd because none of the 'tv' chefs really use them. Nicole-thanks for sharing about the Q-tips...that's hysterical!

I had to laugh when I saw the picture of all the "wraps." It looks just like our kitchen. We have industrial rolls of plastic wrap, freezer paper, and aluminum foil. My chef buys then at the local restaurant supply store. We also have industrial sized supplies of flour. It seems like he can't buy anything in normal sizes any more ;)

LOL on the tongs!!! My chef is the same way, he hates them and doesn't use them, and gives his cooks a bad time if they use them too. We also have the mega roll of saran wrap, which, I must say, I kind of like. We haven't bought plastic wrap in ages!

we moved into a new apt. a few months ago, and i was thrilled that we would have more cabinet space for things. who knew that plastic wrap would take up an entire cabinet! and he's not even home to use the damn stuff!!!
And you'd think that when he did bring food home for me(which is rare) that tupper-ware would suit just fine. oh no...everything i get comes in a hermetically sealed cryovac bag. everything in my fridge looks like it came from a hospital lab.

My chef hates boiled eggs. Also corn on the cob, though he'll eat it off the cob. (???)

I have been reading your blog for months now and for some reason, I've never read any comments. Crazy... I know.

It's been amazing to catch up and while reading these comments (especially Melia's) I have literally been screaming with laughter. My chef (boyfriend) is not quite so OCD about cleaning at home, but he did say to me once while watching all of his cooks wipe down every surface of the kitchen (including the walls behind the appliances) that it almost turned him on. Out of control. So imagining him pulling out the fridge everyday to vacuum is not too far of a stretch.

Now that I think of it, he does do certain things (like cleaning/tidying up) at rapid speeds. Also - major obsession with Q-tips.
