This blog is a place for wives, girlfriends, significant others, and anyone else stuck to a chef to come together and chirp to each other about how to deal with the nonsense that goes along with being the wife of a chef. I was struggling to live with a ghost of a husband who I never saw until I met two other chefs' wives that saved me. It was then that I realized there must be more who need love and support too, right? Hilary, First Lady Desperate Chefs'Wives instagram @hilarya25

Summer of my Chefhusband- Boss?
As a teacher I am privileged enough to get the whole summer off! And by "whole" I mean I have Mondays and Fridays off and the rest of the week I'll be at the school planning for the next school year and writing reports. However, as a teacher I am not privileged in my pay. As you may have heard teachers make about three beans an hour, and I need all the beans I can get.
Why not get a job? A simple, summer job with just enough pay to make me feel useful and just enough responsibility to keep my brain afloat over the summer. Yes, a hostess, or maybe a reservationist! What a great job! Now, if I only knew someone in the restaurant industry who works at a resto in the west village close to me...
Bing! My chef husband! He can get me a job at Perry St, right? WRONG. Erik has made it quite clear that I am not welcome to work at the P. And how come? I'm punctual, poised, organized and polite. That seems like a perfect match for a JG restaurant. Sometimes I think about applying and using my maiden name (a la Lucille McGillicutty). Too bad the GM would recognize me. If I could only pay him off. Erik would never know.
Am I asking too much? If I don't work at Perry St, I'll have to work at Duane Reade! For you non-NYers that's a drug store. Why won't he let me work? I think he has some strange idea that I'll sabotage his career or something. Pah-lease! I just want to spy on him. Kidding! I just want to work there, that's all.

I once walked unannounced into the kitchen that my husband was working at. I was smiling as I approached, thinking how cute he looked saucing that duck breast, when he turned his head and started barking orders at the people around him. I was actually frightened for a moment. I had never seen this side of him! When he saw me he gave me his normal sweet smile; "Hi honey!" looking just like the husband I know and love. But I'll never forget that moment of seeing that hard core chef side of him.
And don't be offended that your hubby doesn't want you to work there. For one thing, he probably just wants to protect you from all the bullshit that may go on and most importantly, the best part of his day is coming home to sweet you, innocent of all the harsh things he has gone through. To be able to snuggle up to someone that has nothing to do with his work and forget the last 14 hours...
I have to agree with la rn. Also it's not good to work where the hubbies/boyfriends work-IMHO.
Why not Spice Market? A ten minute walk from Perry?

I met my Chef at work - he was the chef de cuisine and I was a floor manager. We began dating secretly at first, fell in love, had a baby, and are getting married tomorrow. We still work together - by choice - only now, we own our own restaurant. He's the best boss I've ever had (though I will never admit to him that he is, in fact, my boss).
Erik probably just doesn't want to hear the guys in the kitchen talking about how hot the new hostess is.
Congrats on the wedding! I am so happy for you! You're officially a chefwife(tomorrow). You'll have to tell us all about the wedding! And where is your resto located?
I agree with la rn too, you should work somewhere else. It's good to miss your chef! :)

Thanks for the advice ladies. I won't be working at Perry St this summer. It will probably be just like last summer, I'll end up just working at the school and spending the other days in the park. I did after all earn my summer vacation.
If you are a chef wife then you have to have realized that the restaurant they work at is "the other woman". Maybe he just doesn't want the two to find out about each other!
You are hilarious! Your posts always make me smile!
